Love letter to the universe .. \\
We live in a world where we’re so easily scammed. We’ve taken to believing that anything that slides across our phone screens is real and true. And, strangely enough, even if we consume some content and we know its not actually real or true, neuroscience, the study of the brain, tells us that a curious thing happens in our mind- we actually hold on to the footprint of the thing that we identified to be not-real and not-true. This means that even just the imprint of an image, words or sound can leave a lasting impression of belief in our minds. Yikessss ….
In the practice of Nichiren Buddhism, there is an investment in three types of proof:
Theoretical > Documentary > Actual
What do they mean? Well theorectical proof is just like it sounds … it means that there is logic and reason in the practice. While documentary proof means that the practice is based on historic records and foundational scriptures. Then there’s actual proof, which is the most compelling.
Actual proof means that one identifies, experiences and feels tangible positive results in their daily life, so your practice is based not just on faith but also on actual proof.
I just absolutely love this concept. In a digitally fueled world powered by artificially generated content, deepfake imagery, and charlatans, having physical, tangible proof is not just a gift, it’s a necessity. I invite you to take this concept from Nichiren Buddhism and apply it to your own life.
Stack things up against actual proof. Take the relationship that you’re in- does it bring you joy, happiness, love & affection? Or the job that you put so much time and energy into- are you seeing the results of your effort there? Or that new membership that you signed up for- are you feeling a change? Whatever it is, challenge yourself to have actual proof.
This month I’m celebrating the completion of my Nichiren Buddhism Intro Exam with the Sokai Gokkai, and I’m grateful that my faith community challenges me to define my goals and then hold myself to the actual proof behind them.
I invite you to do this in your own life- look for actual proof and then adjust and adapt based on what you discover.
